West Coast vocalist Kokane has returned with a new 12-track Blues project titled Buddy Long, marking another chapter in a career that has quietly spanned more than three decades across hip-hop, G-funk, and soul. Long known for his elastic falsetto and unmistakable melodic presence, the Pomona native continues to lean into the smoother side of his catalog on the new release, blending modern production with the funk-rooted DNA that has defined his sound since the early '90s. Kokane first gained widespread recognition Ruthless Records under the guidance of Eazy-E, and the following years where his vocals became a familiar thread on records by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tha Eastsidaz, Xzibit, and others. His voice became synonymous with the G-funk era, contributing hooks and harmonies that helped bridge rap and R&B at a time when West Coast records were redefining mainstream radio. Over the years, he built a deep catalog of solo material and collaborations, maintaining ties to both legacy acts and newer independent artists while operating largely outside the major-label system. Buddy Long leans into that independence. The album is positioned as a soulful counterpoint to Kokane's more hip-hop-leaning releases, emphasizing live instrumentation, layered harmonies, and themes centered on loyalty, grown-man romance, and West Coast lifestyle nostalgia. While Kokane has consistently released music in the streaming era, this project arrives amid renewed interest in foundational West Coast contributors, as younger fans revisit the architects behind the G-funk sound and longtime listeners gravitate toward artists still creating on their own terms. In recent years, Kokane has remained visible through touring, legacy collaborations, and interviews that underscore his role as one of the genre's connective figures-someone who worked alongside Death Row Records-era giants while also helping sustain the independent West Coast ecosystem. With Buddy Long, he leans fully into the crooner lane that has always set him apart, offering a reminder that his voice remains one of the most recognizable, and most featured textures to emerge from the golden era of West Coast music.” - Chad Kiser
